6 ways to become a better communicator

The importance of communication can't be overemphasized, both at work and in private life. From uttering different views to our colleagues, to expressing difficult feelings to our loved ones, it requires skills and techniques to communicate ideas and emotions appropriately and to-the-point in various situations. Below are 6 ways that can help each of us become a better communicator.

1. Think through beforehand whenever possible. Be better prepared will never harm, and if necessary, draft a note outlining various layers of the idea. This will not only help to make sure nothing is missed, but also help to control the flow of conversations.

2. Come with a good intention. We often tend to forget this, but it's essential to remind ourselves what we are trying to achieve. This can make a big difference in setting the tone of the conversation, and ultimately influence the outcome.

3. Use analogy for complicated ideas will make it easier for the other side to understand where you are coming from.

4. Some humor would help to lighten up a serious conversation if appropriately used.

5. Choose an appropriate setting wherever possible. Where the conversation happens could also be a key factor in the outcome. Having coffees with the boss instead of formal meetings may work better in certain situations, and vice versa. It all depends on what is going to be discussed.

6. Try to think from the other side as much as possible. Put ourselves in others' shoes, so we could better understand their wishes and concerns. It's easily forgotten that we are not the only ones in the conversation, and we may need to make some compromises in areas that are acceptable to us. It's a give-and-take.
